Judy Garland: always the right decision
I think Judy Garland is becoming to my 20s as Mariah Carey was to my childhood. (i.e. a holy divinity)
Judy is SO GOOD at dixie songs. I love how she mixes in the ugly sounds with the beautiful to produce a rawer emotion.
Young Judy had such a beautiful voice, too! What’s equally impressive is her expressions throughout the song. When you look at her face (1:55-2:06), she seems to be singing a much more mature song than the silly movie scene called for.
So sweet and cute and fun! Judy’s also actually playing the piano there in the beginning, too:
The juxtaposition of her stuttery introduction and her flawless singing gives you an insight into how incredibly talented she was. Nervous and unstable in any other context, but able to regain complete and precise expressive control when giving a performance.
